The municipality of Uruçuí (PI) received, on Tuesday (12), the second day of the 2nd pilot test for the Census of Agriculture, Forestry and Aquaculture, conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The action is part of a strategic step in preparation for the national survey, focused o the assessment of methodologies, data collection instruments and operational procedures in the field.
During the pilot test, the IBGE teams test different aspects of the census operation, such as questionnaires, digital systems, organization of routine activities and strategies in logistics to access rural establishments. The objective is to identify necessary adjustments before the start of the national census operation, and ensure effectiveness and better coverage of information.
Dialogue with indigenous community stands out
One of the highlights of this second day in Uruçuí was a meeting with representatives of the Gueguê do Sangue indigenous community. The meeting took place at the IBGE unit established in the municipality and was marked by careful institutional attitude in respect to the period of mourning of the visited community after the loss of one of its members.
The main topics discussed were the strengthening of a dialogue between both parties and the preparation for receiving the enumerators during the data collection phase. Practical matters were also discussed: the best routes to reach the territories and the most appropriate way of approaching informants, considering cultural and social particularities of the locality.
The initiative reinforces the importance of active listening and of a cooperative construction of the census process, especially in territories of traditional peoples and communities, where knowledge of the territory and interaction with local leaders are essential for a successful operation.
Unprecedented inclusion expands representativeness
The pilot test in Uruçuí also reflects on the main innovations in the 12th Census of Agriculture: the inclusion of agri-food production systems of traditional peoples and communities.
With this increase, the IBGE intends to portray in more detail the diversity of forms of production in the country, including practices developed by indigenous peoples, riverside communities, wild crop harvesters, etc.
This measure helps increase the representativeness of these segments in official data, thus providing more consistent subsidies for the formulation of public policies aimed at food security, sustainability and territorial development.
Tests assess the reality of the field
In parallel with institutional collaboration, the teams go on conducting field tests in different areas of the municipality. Uruçuí, located in the Matopiba region (agricultural border encompassing parts of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia), has relevant characteristics for the testing of Census methodologies.
The productive diversity and the specific conditions of access to the territory help assess the effectiveness of data collection instruments in different contexts, including more intensive production areas and others with a greater presence of traditional communities.
This step enables the IBGE to adjust procedures related to the use of legal devices, geolocation of production units and organization of teams, thus ensuring standardization and reliability of the future census operation.
The conduction of this pilot test in the municipality reinforces the role of Uruçuíin the context of agricultural production and evidences IBGE's commitment to the construction of data that can even better represent the reality of Brazil.
With the inclusion of new analyses and the improvement of methodologies, the 12th Census of Agriculture advances as an essential tool to explain the field in Brazil, its diversity, and to guide decisions that will have an impact on national development.
