The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, by means of the State Superintendency in Pará (SES/PA), will host the release the Species Richness Map 2025”, an initiative that marks the start of celebrations for the 90th anniversary of the IBGE in the North Region and celebrates the history of the institution in the production and dissemination of information of geographic and statistical information in the country.

The event will take place on May 13, 2026, at 10 am, in Barcarena, the municipality that will host the second Pilot Test of the 12th Census of Agriculture, Forestry and Aquaculture, in the period of May 11 to 22 this year.

The launch event will take place at the auditorium of the University of the State of Pará (Uepa), Campus XVI – Barcarena, in partnership with the Degree Program in Geography Education.

The launch ceremony will take place at the auditorium of the University of the State of Pará (Uepa), Campus XVI – Barcarena, in partnership with the Campus Coordination and the Geography Department of this higher education institution. The event will be hosted by José Daniel Castro da Silva, coordinator-general of the IBGE's Center for information Documentation and Dissemination (CDDI), the state superintendent of IBGE in Pará (SES-PA), Rony Helder Nogueira Cordeiro, besides authorities, institututional representatives, members of the academic community and of civil society.

The initiative is intended to promote reflections about biodiversity and highlights the role of Brazil in this context. “At the age of 90, the IBGE will transform cartography into a political and civilizing platform, as it places Brazil at the center, inverts the North-South axis and presents continents in real proportions. Therefore, the new world map challenges centuries of an Europe-based view as ir repositions the Global South at the center of the debate about biodiversity, power and the future of the planet,” said Marcio Pochmann, president of the IBGE, as he remembered the launch of the inverted world map for COP30, in November 2025.

“Species Richness 2025” World Map

The world map “Species Richness 2025” presents relevant information on global biodiversity, based on the species richness indicator, which measures the potential number of species from various groups (amphibians, birds, mammals, reptiles, crustaceans, and freshwater fish) in 100 km² cells. Also, the map features innovations in spatial representation, such as the centrality of Brazil, the inversion of the North-South orientation, and the use of the Equal Earth projection.

The launch is also part of the activities to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity, on May 22nd, whose theme for 2026, defined by the United Nations, is “Acting locally for a global impact,” reinforcing the importance of biodiversity protection for environmental balance, health, and the well-being of the population.

During the launch, an opening ceremony will be held, and the “Species Richness Map 2025” will be presented in a large-format printed version (4m x 2m) on canvas and displayed on a backdrop for the academic community and society to visualize the full richness of species and the representation of the continents in real proportions.

The first laucnh of the Map was on May 4, 2026, in Brasília, at the Itamaraty Palace - Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marking the beginning of the celebrations of the IBGE's 90th anniversary in Brazil.
