Update of Municipal Maps

Description

The "Update of Municipal Maps" (1) refers to Municipal Maps of the Municipalities that have had their borders updated somehow. These updates have not reached all the Brazilian municipalities, so that maps have not been produced for all of them.

Municipal Maps represent the intramunicipal Political Administrative Division (districts and subdistricts), intermunicipal and interstate borders and the main planimetric elements and hydrography elements.

The Municipal Maps annually produced by the IBGE consider the updated status of the Brazilian Political and Administrative Division (DPA). The dynamics of DPA reflects the updates in the municipal borders of the municipalities, within the Technical Cooperation Agreements (ACT) between the IBGE and state bodies in charge of the Political Administrative Division.

The territory updates occur as a result of one of the following factors: publication of a new law, legal decision and technical reports issued by the respective state bodies in charge of the political-administrative division of each state and sent to the IBGE. However, we explain the most common factors are cartographic adjustments following technical reports produced by the States and the publication by the State of a new law that updates municipal borders.

The versions of 2012 to 2019 update the collection of the 2010 Census Municipal Statistical Maps:

About the publication - 2025

The territorial updates to municipal borders, based on analyses conducted within the scope of the Technical Cooperation Agreements (ACT) that IBGE has with state agencies responsible for the Political-Administrative Division – DPA, considered the submissions from these agencies to the IBGE between May 1, 2024, and April 30, 2025, which were incorporated into the “2025 Digital Municipal Mesh”.

The purpose of Municipal Maps is to support the visualization of the geographical configuration of borders defined by the state institutions legally responsible for the Political-Administrative division, in addition to the current territorial structures with which the IBGE supports the field operations of the Data Collection, Processing, Tabulation and Analysis, and Geographic and Statistical Dissemination stages, associated with Household Surveys, Annual Population Estimates and Censuses, in fulfillment of the IBGE's institutional mission, as well as the geographical characterization of the Brazilian territory. Therefore, the IBGE understands that these maps were developed for exclusive use in IBGE's statistical data collection and tabulation activities and should not be used for other purposes. The IBGE is not responsible for their use for any other purposes.

The municipal borders represented here should not be considered as official demarcations or characterizations. The IBGE Municipal Maps should not be used as a legal instrument for defining, locating, demarcating, or publicly registering properties, or for defining the position of any type of urban infrastructure, municipal land subdivision involving the administration of IPTU (Property Tax), TSU (Urban Services Tax), ITBI (Real Estate Transfer Tax), ISSQN (Service Tax), or any other territorial or fiscal planning instrument, nor for defining, controlling, or possessing territorial assets or the subordination of urban or rural properties, master plans, land sibdivision approval or linking processes, cadastral, fiscal, or socioeconomic administration processes, pipelines, power plants, airports, antennas, oil/gas wells, mining areas, wind farm towers, toll plazas, tax offices, and any other commercial or industrial buildings or installations.
