Brazilian Relief Classification System

Description

Aiming at standardizing issues related to the classification structure of the Brazilian relief, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Brazilian Geological Service (SGB/CPRM), the Brazilian Geomorphology Union (UGB) and researchers from several Brazilian education institutions joined to develop the Brazilian System of Relief Classification (SBCR), aiming at creating a single taxonomic system of relief classification that provides a common language and the standardization, structuring and recommendation of its representation.

This environment will publish advances involved in the development of this system, including the publication of the system itself, reports of the workshops on the SBCR, Relief Classification Meetings and technical expeditions carried out in events to disseminate it to the scientific society.

About the publication - Technical Expeditions: Entering the Pantanal plain

The IBGE has been working with the Brazilian Geological Service (SGB), the Brazilian Geomorphology Union (UGB) and researchers from several Brazilian education institutions aiming at developing a Brazilian System of Relief Classification (SBCR). This initiative aims at providing a relief taxonomy in the entire national territory that allows not only the construction of a common language, but also the standardization, structuring and establishment of criteria for its representation, taking into account the different sub-areas of the Geomorphology, multiscaling and the diversity of the Brazilian relief.

With this release, the IBGE presents the itinerary and discussions occurred during the 2nd SBCR Technical Expedition, called "Entering the Pantanal Plain", under the scope of the 14th National Symposium on Geomorphology - Sinageo, held in August 2023 in Corumbá, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The expedition included four stops distributed along 420 km, focused on the major geomorphological units and on the typical forms of relief of the route between Campo Grande and Corumbá, in the transition between the Parraná Sedimentary Basin and the Pantanal.

The publication brings a presentation on the Pantanal region, especially the Mato Grosso do Sul portion and the stretch covered during the expedition; an overview on the vegetation coverage and land use in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul in relation to the relief compartments, considering the years of 2000 and 2020, based on mappings carried out by the IBGE; the selected itinerary and the stop points; discussions and relections occurred in each point, mainly involving the forms of relief and associated processes. In addition, considerations on the event held on August 24, 2023 are taken into account, as well as the perspectives of geomorphological mapping of the region, according to the SBCR.

It is expected that this publication, also available on the IBGE portal, fosters the SBCR and its advances, promoting the engagement of researchers and of those interested in the Brazilian relief.
