Atlas of the Population Census

Description

The Atlas of the Demographic Census deals with fundamental issues of the Brazilian population and territory, being structured o approach, in an encompassing and interconnected way, the several dimensions that form the dynamics and the demographic profile of the Brazilian population, with a focus on local and regional differences. The geographic interpretation of information in the Population Census of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics – IBGE – constitutes a renewed challenge in the sense of showing not only the evolution of the demographic profile of the Brazilian population, but of the overall process of distribution of that population over the national territory as well, which means interpreting the always changing forms of settlement in the country and its regions. In this respect, the commitment with the decennial description of the Brazilian population geography leads us to a reflection about the general processes that influence the movement of urbanization of Brazil, as well as the generation of socio-spatial inequalities generated throughout this movement and that affect the resident populations of the city and the countryside.

About the publication - 2010

With this Atlas the IBGE presents the different aspects of the national territory and the multiple dimensions that compose the dynamics and the profile of the population, extending, this way, the possibility of analyzing demographic contrasts and social and regional inequalities seen in the results already released of the 2010 Population Census. To portray such aspects, the publication is structured in a range of topics that considers comprehensively and interconnectedly the various dimensions that make up the dynamics and demographic profile of the population, with emphasis on the regional and local differences found.

The selected topics encompass Brazil's position in the world, its political-administrative divisions, the population's demographic characteristics, as well as its spatial distribution, flows in the territory and urbanization aspects. It also addresses the housing status, socioeconomic profile and cultural diversities of the population. The publication includes a glossary of terms and concepts considered relevant to the understanding of the results. As a whole, the information made available by now contextualize the contemporary changes in the geography of the Brazilian population, meeting the demands of the growing interest, seen lately, in the territory in multiple geographic scales.

What is the Atlas of the Population Census?

The Atlas of the Population Census deals with fundamental issues about the Brazilian territory and population, being structured to approach, in an interconnected and encompassing manner, the many dimensions that form the dynamics and the demographic profile of the Brazilian population, with emphasis on the regional and local differences found.

The geographic interpretation of the information in the IBGE’s Population Census consists of a renewed challenge of not only describing the demographic evolution of the Brazilian society but also the overall process of distribution of the population over the national territory. That implies interpretation of the ever changing forms of settlement of the country and its Major Regions. In this respect, the commitment of describing the Brazilian’s population geography, every ten years, points to a reflection about the general processes that make urbanization more dynamic in the country, as well as the about the generation of social and spatial differences derived from that movement, necessarily linked to resident populations in cities and in the country as well.

What is the Population Census?

The Population Census is the main source of reference for information about the population’s living conditions in all the municipalities in the country and their inside subdivisions, having as collection unit the resident person, on the date of reference, in housing units of the National Territory.
