The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) held, this Wednesday (January 21), the workshop “Exploring the IBGE's sources of information: informational and media literacy in the fight against disinformation.” The course is part of a set of ten holiday workshops, offered by the IBGE between January 21 and 30, 2025. There are activities in remote and in-person modes, in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Pernambuco.

Librarian and master in Information and Media Literacy Danielle Barreiros, from the IBGE's Division of Service and Information (COATI), highlighted the urgency of data literacy.

“Our objective is twofold: to present IBGE information sources accessible to citizens and, at the same time, discuss informational and media literacy. As the official information office about Brazil, we know that many people have difficulty accessing and interpreting data, as well as understanding the importance of seeking reliable sources. Therefore, we address the difference between primary and secondary sources, the need to verify the origin of the information and recognize signs of disinformation. We live in a complex information environment, in which anyone can produce content, and it is essential to know how to identify producers and disseminators of information. Information exists in abundance, the challenge is to recognize its quality,” said Barreiros.

The workshop focused on the impact of the growing phenomenon of misinformation, which also affects statistical and geoscientific data. Workshop members were invited to reflect on the ethical and legal responsibility in the act of producing, consuming and sharing information, understanding its role in the circulation of reliable content.

Analyst at Open Knowledge Brazil, participant Juliana DeCastro suggested partnerships to promote citizen data integration: “Misinformation produces very negative effects, and generative AI also interferes, accelerating this scenario. In this context, it is important to seek partnerships to expand the dissemination of data from reliable sources. Casa Fluminense and Data Labe, from Maré, in 2025, organized the second Citizen Data Generation Seminar, a work that dialogues directly with today's workshop.”

The meeting at Casa Brasil IBGE also included practical tips and guidance to recognize and combat misleading contents, contributing to the formation of citizens who are better prepared to deal with today's informational challenges. Participants were able to learn about the differences between data, information and knowledge, as well as aspects of tacit information.

The complete schedule of workshops can be obtained here. Registration is free and must be made via the IBGE Virtual Store by 3 pm on the day before each workshop. The workshops will be taught by technicians and experts from the Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination (CDDI) and IBGE State Superintendencies. At the end, participants will receive a certificate issued by the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE).
