On Thursday (26), the IBGE released, for the first time ever, the major Brazilian short-term economic data obtained from the IBGE´s surveys in a single report. One of the goals is to show how this information contributes to the interpretation of the Brazilian economic reality. By highlighting the most relevant results in 2024, the document gathers statistics related to the following themes: labor and income from labor; production of agricultural activities; production from industrial, trade and services activities; and indexes of prices and costs.
"Besides widening the visibility of the IBGE´s short-term surveys in the field of economy, this new product might contribute for the planning of economic policies. It is also an invitation for people to deeply access the IBGE´s publications," states João Hallak, from the IBGE´s Directorate of Surveys. According to him, it is intended to publish the report annually.
The product "Economic Indicators of Brazil - 2024" encompasses the results of 12 surveys: Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD); Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA); Quarterly Survey of Animal Slaughter; Quarterly Survey of Milk; Production of Hen Eggs (POG); Quarterly Survey of Leather; Monthly Survey of Industry - Physical Production (PIM-PF); Monthly Survey of Trade (PMC); Monthly Survey of Services (PMS); Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA); National Consumer Price Index (INPC); National System of Costs Survey and Indexes of Construction (
"The production of this report involved the participation of professionals from different IBGE areas. The Economic Statistics Committee, under the Directorate of Surveys, counts with people from several divisions. It was a challenge to carry out regular meetings with people with different profiles and to selected what would be included in the publication. We are happy with the result and we aim at improving it in the coming years," notes João Hallak.
The economic scenario in 2024
The year of 2024 was marked by extreme climate imbalances and uncertainties. In the foreign scenario, conflicts continued in Europe and in the Middle East, international concerns related with the election in the United States, trend of the international interest rates and deceleration of the Chinese economy. In the domestic scenario, expectations related to the conduction of the fiscal policy, inflation dynamics and devaluation of the real against the dollar, coupled with the warming of the labor market, conditioned the performance of the indicators.
Last year, the Brazilian GDP grew 3.4% compared with 2023, accumulating a rise of 6.7% in the 2023-2024 biennium. The labor market registered records in the contingent of employed persons, the lowest unemployment rates and the highest real wage bill in the time series, influencing on the growth of consumption and production.
While agriculture recorded a weak performance, due to adverse climate effects, industry and services reported significant rises in 2024. Compared with the previous year, the agricultural activity characterized by the drop in the production of grains. In livestock, animal slaughtering registered the highest levels in the time series and milk acquired by dairy industries hit the second largest volume ever recorded. Moreover, the production of hen eggs was a record.
The industrial sector reported positive figure in all the four broad economic categories and in 20 out of 25 sectors (63.1% of the 789 products surveyed). Trade volumes, retail and extended retail, were close to the highest level ever registered in the time series. The performance of volume of services, which, in 2024, renewed the highest level of the time series started in January 2011, was a highlight as well.
Concerning consumer price indexes, the group of Food and beverages was the biggest impact on the cumulative result in 2024. In the case of producer prices, basic metals, tobacco, other transportation equipment and wood were the industrial activities with the most significant changes.
