Public disaster in Rio Grande do Sul and its impact on IBGE surveys and indicators

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reiterates the solidarity to the state of Rio Grande do Sul, to the victims´ relatives and to the population hit by an unprecedented rainfall, always expressing the foremost concern with the maintenance of lives, rescues and safety of the inhabitants of the most affected areas.

The IBGE has 36 branches distributed throughout the state. Preliminary information points out to nearly 20 of them with significant damages, like the Lajeado branch, incommunicado until today due to the crash of a bridge.

Therefore, the IBGE is in permanent contact with the State Superintendence to follow it up and to assess the extent of the damages to the physical facilities of the state headquarters and municipal branches.

The IBGE reinforces the need to wait for the development of the events and check how the information transmission to the IBGE will behave along this month, in order to estimate possible impacts in terms of production of results and publication of indicators related to Rio Grande do Sul, and its participation in the national indicators.
