IPCA-15 is 0.62% in May

The Extended National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15) was 0.62% in May, standing 0.27 percentage points (p.p.) below the April rate (0.89%). In the year, the IPCA-15 accumulated an increase of 3.02% and, in 12 months, of 4.64%, above the rate of 4.37% observed in the immediately previous 12 months. In May 2025, the IPCA-15 had been 0.36%.

Of the nine groups of products and services surveyed, Food and beverages stood out with the greatest change (1.38%) and impact (0.30 p.p.). Then, Housing (1.03% and 0.15 p.p.) and Health and personal care (1.05% and 0.14 p.p.) registered the biggest influences on the overall result. The other changes were between -0.33% (Transportation) and 0.50% (Personal expenses).

In the group of Food and beverages (1.38%), food at home rose from 1.77% in April to 1.73% in May. Contributing to this result were the declines in apples (-2.32%) and ground coffee (-2.09%). On the other hand, the highlights were the increases in potatoes (26.29%), tomatoes (12.97%), long-life milk (6.07%) and meat (1.98%).

Food away from home (0.51%) slowed down in relation to April (0.70%), due to the changes in meals (0.57%) and snacks (0.37%) which, in April, had increased by 0.65% and 0.87%, respectively.

In the group of Housing (1.03%) the highlight was residential electricity (2.16% and 0.09 p.p.), the main individual impact on the index. In May, the yellow tariff flag came into force, with an additional charge of R$1.885 for every 100 kWh consumed. In addition, the following tariff adjustments were made: 5.59% in Fortaleza (5.41%) and 4.78% in Salvador (5.97%), as of April 22; 3.86% in Recife (5.18%), as of April 29th.

Still in Housing, water and sewage fees (0.13%) took into account the 4.80% adjustment in Goiânia (2.26%), in force since April 1st. Consider, also, the average adjustment of 3.00% in piped gas (0.44%) in Rio de Janeiro (1.46%), in force since May 1st.

In Health and personal care (1.05%), the result was influenced by personal hygiene products (1.60%) and by pharmaceuticals (1.25%), reflecting the authorization of an adjustment of up to 3.81% in the prices of medicines, from April 1st, and by health insurance plans (0.50%).

In the group of Transportation (-0.33%), fuels decelerated from 6.06% in April to -1.47% in May, with decreases in ethanol (-2.73%), diesel fuel (-2.04%) and gasoline (-1.32%), while vehicular gas had an increase of 2.12%. The sub-item airfare increased 3.25%, after falling 14.32% in April.

Still in Transportation, urban bus (-0.56%), changed due to free fares or fare reductions on Sundays in São Paulo (0.44%) and Salvador (0.36%) and, with reductions or free fares also on holidays, in Brasília (-3.30%), Belém (-3.41%), Belo Horizonte (-3.29%) and Curitiba (-1.46%). In public transportation integration (0.30%), it changed 0.30% in São Paulo, with free buses granted on Sundays; in subway (-0.21%), the change of -3.30% in Brasília, was appropriated due to free services on Sundays and holidays. In intercity bus (0.27%), an increase of 8.18% was recorded in Porto Alegre (2.46%), in force since April 8th.

As for regional indices, the biggest change was recorded in Goiânia (1.41%), due to the increases in ethanol (16.62%) and gasoline (9.67%). The lowest result occurred in Brasília (0.33%), which saw a drop in the prices of urban bus (-3.30%) and gasoline (-2.96%).

To calculate the IPCA-15, prices were collected from April 16 to May 15 (reference) and compared with those in force from March 18 to April 15, 2026 (base). The indicator refers to households with monthly income of 1 to 40 minimum wages and it encompasses the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador, Curitiba, besides Brasília and the municipality of Goiânia. The methodology is the same as the one used for the IPCA; the difference lies in the period of price collection and in the geographic coverage.
