Compared to February 2025, the industrial sector fell 0.7% in February 2026, with nine out of 18 places surveyed recording a drop in the production. It is worth noting that February 2026 (18 days) had 2 fewer business days than the same month in the previous year (20). The sharpest drop this month was that of Rio Grande do Norte (-24.5%), largely driven by the activities of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel fuel), food products (shelled or crushed cashew nuts, candies, wheat flour, iodized table salt, compound condiments and seasonings, crystal sugar and roasted and ground coffee) and mining and quarrying industries (sea salt associated with extraction).
Ceará (-9.8%), Paraná (-7.7%), Amazonas (-7.2%), Goiás (-6.1%), Santa Catarina (-5.9%), Bahia (-4.1%), São Paulo (-3.6%) and Maranhão (-1.6%) completed the group of places with a decline this month.
By recording zero change (0.0%) this month, Minas Gerais repeated the production level seen in February 2025. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (31.3%) and Pernambuco (25.0%) registered double-digit advances and the highest ones in February 2026, driven, to a large extent, by the activities of mining and quarrying industries (pelletized or sintered iron ore, crude petroleum oil and natural gas), in the first place; and coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel fuel, fuel oils and liquefied petroleum gas) and basic metals (carbon steel rebars, ingots, blocks, rods or plates, and lead in raw forms), in the second. Mato Grosso do Sul (8.3%), Rio de Janeiro (5.8%), Mato Grosso (2.9%), Northeast Region (1.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (0.7%) and Pará (0.4%) recorded the other positive results in the monthly index for February 2026.
In the cumulative index for January-February 2026, compared to the same period of the previous year, the industrial sector fell 0.2%, with negative results in nine out of 18 places surveyed. Rio Grande do Norte (-24.8%) marked the highest decline in the cumulative index for the first two months of 2026.
Ceará (-8.8%), Bahia (-7.5%), Amazonas (-7.1%), Santa Catarina (-6.2%), Goiás (-5.5%), Paraná (-4.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.0%) and São Paulo (-2.4%) completed the group of places with a drop in the production in the cumulative index in the year. On the other hand, Pernambuco (26.4%) and Espírito Santo (22.6%) recorded the most pronounced advances in the cumulative index for the first two months of 2026.
Mato Grosso do Sul (8.1%), Rio de Janeiro (5.9%), Mato Grosso (3.8%), Maranhão (2.3%), Minas Gerais (1.6%), Pará (0.5%) and the Northeast Region (0.5%) also showed positive results in the cumulative index for the period of January-February 2026.
When comparing the result of the last four months of 2025 with that of the first two months of 2026, both comparisons against the same periods of the previous year, 11 out of 18 places surveyed showed a loss of dynamism, thus following the movement observed in the national total, which went from 0.0% to -0.2%.
In regional terms, Rio Grande do Norte (from -1.4% to -24.8%), Goiás (from 4.0% to -5.5%), Amazonas (from 2.2% to -7.1%), Ceará (from 0.2% to -8.8%), Santa Catarina (from 1.2% to -6.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 4.3% to -3.0%) and Bahia (from -1.0% to -7.5%) marked the main losses, while Pernambuco (from 2.6% to 26.4%), Mato Grosso do Sul (from -13.6% to 8.1%), Mato Grosso (from -6.4% to 3.8%) Pará (from -6.2% to 0.5%) and Maranhão (from -3.5% to 2.3%) recorded the sharpest gains between the two periods.
Having increased 0.3% in February 2026, the annualized rate, cumulative indicator in the last 12 months, remained positive, but continued to show a loss of pace compared to the results of previous months. In regional terms, eight out of 18 places surveyed showed positive rates in February 2026, but eight registered less dynamism compared to last January's rates. Santa Catarina (from 1.9% to 0.9%), Paraná (from 0.1% to -0.9%), Ceará (from -1.3% to -2.1%), Goiás (from 2.0% to 1.5%) and São Paulo (from -2.2% to -2.6%) recorded the most pronounced losses between January and February 2026, while Espírito Santo (from 13.5% to 17.0%), Pernambuco (from -0.6% to 2.7%), Rio de Janeiro (from 5.8% to 6.5%), Northeast Region (from -0.6% to -0.1%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (from -11.9% to -11.4%) showed the main gains between the two periods.

The Regional PIM has been producing short-term indicators since the 1970s regarding the behavior of the real product from mining and quarrying and manufacturing industries. It brings monthly indexes for 17 Federation Units whose share are at least 0.5% of the total value added of the national industry and for the Northeast as a whole: Amazonas, Pará, Maranhão, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás and the Northeast Region.
