Volume of Services changes by 0.3% in January

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of services in Brazil had a positive change of 0.3% in January 2026 compared to December 2025. Therefore, the services sector was 20.1% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and equaled the record in the time series reached in October and again in November 2025. Compared to January 2025, volume of services grew 3.3%, its 22nd consecutive positive result. The cumulative rate in the last 12 months was 3.0%, slightly above December 2025 (2.9%).

The rise in volume of services (0.3%) between December 2025 and January 2026 was followed by three out of five activities investigated, highlighted by other services (3.7%), which offset part of the loss in December (-4.2%). The other advances came from information and communication (1.0%) and transportation (0.4%), with the first accumulating 3.6% in the last two months; and the second recovering part of the 4.1% loss seen from November to December 2025. The only negative rate this month came from services rendered to families (-1.2%), eliminating the gain accumulated between October and December 2025 (0.8%). On the other hand, professional, administrative and complementary services remained stable (0.0%).

Still in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average for services remained stable (0.0%) in the quarter ending in January 2026, compared to the immediately previous quarter. Three out of five activities showed negative behavior, with emphasis on transportation (-1.3%), followed by services rendered to families (-0.2%) and other services (-0.1%). On the other hand, the expansions occurred in information and communication (0.8%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.5%).

In comparison with January 2025, volume of services grew 3.3% in January 2026, the twenty-second positive result in a row. This progress was accompanied by the five dissemination activities and by 48.2% of the 166 types of services investigated.

The sectors of  information and communication (6.5%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (5.0%) exerted the main positive impacts, driven by the increase in revenue from information technology consultancy; portals, content providers and other information services on the internet; data processing, application service providers and Internet hosting services; software development and licensing; editing integrated with book printing; and development of on demand computer programs, in the first sector; and agencying of advertising; business intermediation in general through applications or e-commerce platforms; surveillance and private security activities; operation of loyalty programs and discount cards; cleaning activities; and temporary labor leasing, in the last one.

The other advances came from transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (1.1%); other services (1.9%); and services rendered to families (0.5%), explained, to a large extent, by the greater revenue coming from cargo road transportation; air passenger transportation; railway cargo transportation; highway concessionaires; and inland cargo navigation, in the first sector; and from securities brokerages; collection of non-hazardous waste of domestic, urban or industrial origin; management of stock exchange and organized over-the-counter markets; and auxiliary activities for insurance, supplementary pensions and health insurance plans, in the second; and from restaurants, in the last one.

Volume of services grows in 12 out of 27 Federation Units

Regionally, 12 out of 27 Federation Units recorded an expansion in volume of services in January 2026, compared to the immediately previous month, in the seasonally-adjusted series. Among the places that recorded positive rates this month, the most important impact came from São Paulo (1.6%), followed by Mato Grosso (5.6%), Santa Catarina (1.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.1%) and Pará (3.1%). On the other hand, Paraná (-7.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (-3.0%) exerted the main negative influences this month.

Compared to January 2025, the 3.3% increase in volume of services was seen in 16 out of 27 Federation Units. The most important positive contribution came from São Paulo (6.5%), with Mato Grosso (44.8%), Federal District (10.0%), Pará (6.9%) and Amazonas (5.7%) following. The most significant losses came from Rio de Janeiro (-3.2%), Minas Gerais (-1.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-2.5%).

Tourism activities fall 1.1% in January

In January 2026, the tourism activity index fell 1.1% compared to December 2025, the second negative result in a row, a period in which it accumulated a loss of 1.5%. As a result, the tourism segment was 11.6% above the level of February 2020 and 1.9% below the peak of its time series, reached in December 2024.

Only eight out of 17 places surveyed followed this downward trend in the national tourism activity (-1.1%). The most relevant negative influence came from Paraná (-9.4%), followed by Pernambuco (-8.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.6%). In the opposite direction, São Paulo (0.6%) led this month, followed by Amazonas (4.7%) and Pará (3.2%).

Compared to January 2025, the volume of tourism activities in Brazil grew 3.5%, after falling 0.7% in December 2025, when 18 consecutive positive results were interrupted. The main drive, in January, came from the sectors of air passenger transportation; travel agencies; restaurants; and accommodation-related reservation services.

Eleven out of 17 Federation Units where the indicator is investigated showed progress in services aimed at tourism, with highlights being São Paulo (5.0%) and Rio de Janeiro (11.9%), followed by Pará (17.9%), Federal District (8.8%), Mato Grosso (20.7%) and Amazonas (13.7%). On the other hand, Minas Gerais (-6.5%) exerted the main negative impact of the month, followed by Santa Catarina (-6.3%), Pernambuco (-6.6%) and Goiás (-8.4%).

Passenger transportation remains stable and cargo transportation changes 0.1%

In January 2026, the volume of passenger transportation in Brazil registered stability (0.0%) compared to the immediately previous month, in the series free of seasonal influences, after having recorded two consecutive declines, a period in which it accumulated a loss of 4.6%. Therefore, in this reference month, the segment was 6.7% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 17.9% below February 2014 (highest point in the time series).

In turn, the volume of cargo transportation showed a positive change of 0.1% in January 2026, after having decreased by 1.5% in the previous month. Therefore, the segment was 4.3% below the highest point in its time series (July 2023). In relation to the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation was 38.3% above February 2020.

In comparison with the same month of the previous year, without seasonal adjustment, passenger transportation showed an expansion of 5.7% in January 2026, the 17th positive result in a row; while cargo transportation advanced 3.0%, in the same type of comparison, thus registering the ninth consecutive increase.
