Continuous PNAD: annual unemployment rates are the lowest ones in time series in 20 Federation Units

The Brazilian unemployment rate was 5.1% in the fourth quarter of 2025, a significant reduction over the previous quarter (5.6%) and retreating 1.1 p.p. compared to the same moving quarter of 2024 (6.2%). On the other hand, the annual rate fell from 6.6% in 2024 to 5.6% in 2025, the lowest annual rate in the time series, started in 2012. The highest annual unemployment rates in 2025 were in Piauí (9.3%), Bahia and Pernambuco (both with 8.7%) and Amazonas (8.4%). The lowest annual unemployment rates were in Mato Grosso (2.2%), Santa Catarina (2.3%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (3.0%).

The annual underutilization rate for Brazil stayed at 14.5%. Piauí (31.0%) registered the highest rate, followed by Bahia and Alagoas (both with 26.8%), while the lowest annual rates were in Santa Catarina (4.6%), Mato Grosso (6.8%) and Espírito Santo (7.4%).

The annual informality rate for Brazil was 38.1% of the employed population. The highest annual rates were in Maranhão (58.7%), Pará (58.5%) and Bahia (52.8%) and the lowest ones were in Santa Catarina (26.3%), Federal District (27.3%) and São Paulo (29.0%).

The annual discouragement rate for Brazil stayed at 2.6%. Maranhão (9.5%) recorded the highest rate, followed by Alagoas (8.5%) and Piauí (7.8%), while the lowest annual rates were in Santa Catarina (0.3%), Mato Grosso do Sul (0.6%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.9%).

The annual value of the usual real earnings from all jobs reached R$3,560. The highest values ​​were from the Federal District (R$6,320), São Paulo (R$4,190) and Rio de Janeiro (R$4,177). The lowest values ​​were from Maranhão (R$ 2,228), Bahia (R$ 2,284) and Ceará (R$ 2,394).

The annual employment-population ratio reached 59.1% in 2025. The highest percentages for this indicator were shown by Mato Grosso (66.7%), Santa Catarina (66.2%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (64.4%) and the lowest ones, by Alagoas (47.5%), Ceará (47.8%) and Rio Grande do Norte (47.9%). The employment-population ratio is the proportion of employed persons in the population aged 14 years and over.
