Industry closes the year with increases in 10 of the 18 areas surveyed

At the end of the year, against the same period in 2024, the industrial sector advanced 0.6% in December 2025, with increases in 10 of the 18 areas surveyed. Espírito Santo (11.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.1%) showed significant increases, whereas Mato Grosso do Sul (-12.9%) and Rio Grande do Norte (-11.6%) had the biggest drops.
In the seasonally adjusted series, industrial output decreased by 1.2% from the previous month, with negative rates in 12 of the 15 areas surveyed. Bahia (-10.1%) and Pará (-9.2%) recorded the main drops. The most significant positive results were those of Rio de Janeiro (2.3%), Mato Grosso (1.3%) and Pernambuco (0.8%).
The quarterly moving average recorded a negative change of 0.5% in the quarter ending December 2025 from the level of a year ago. The main drops were those of Pará (-3.6%), Bahia (-2.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.1%), Northeast Region (-1.8%), Amazonas (-1.6%), Ceará (-1.4%) and São Paulo (-1.3%). On the other hand, Mato Grosso (4.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.6%) recorded the biggest increases.

Industrial production in Brazil decreased by 1.2% from the previous month, in the seasonally-adjusted series, with negative rates in twelve of the fifteen areas surveyed. Bahia (-10.1%) and Pará (-9.2%) accounted for the main drops, with the former recording the biggest decrease since March 2021 (-11.6%) and offsetting the cumulative increase of 3.4% in the period October/November 2025; and the latter recording the fourth consecutive negative result and a cumulative decrease of 13.4% in this period. Amazonas (-5.2%), Northeast Region (-5.1%), Espírito Santo (-5.0%), Minas Gerais (-4.7%), Santa Catarina (-2.8%), Paraná (-2.6%) and São Paulo (-1.6%) also had negative rates below the nationa average (-1.2%), whereas Ceará (-0.7%), Goiás (-0.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0.5%) completed the group of areas with negative indexes in December 2025.
On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (2.3%) recorded the main drop this month and eliminated the decline of 1.6% registered in November 2025. Mato Grosso (1.3%) and Pernambuco (0.8%) also recorded positive results in December 2025.
Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the industry overall recorded a negative change of 0.5% in the quarter ending December 2025 from the level of a month before and contributed to the loss of November 2025 (-0.2%). In regional terms, also in relation to the marginal movement, twelve of the fifteen areas surveyed recorded negative results in the month, where the main drops in Pará (-3.6%), Bahia (-2.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.1%), Northeast Region (-1.8%), Amazonas (-1.6%), Ceará (-1.4%) and São Paulo (-1.3%) stand out. On the other hand, Mato Grosso (4.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.6%) accounted for the biggest increases in December 2025.
Against December 2024, the industrial sector recorded a positive change of 0.4% in December 2025, with eight of the eighteen areas surveyed recording increase in production. It is worth mentinong that December 2025 (22 days) had 1 business day less than the same month in the previous year (21). Espírito Santo (19.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (10,3%) recorded two-digit increases in the month, driven by the positive performance of mining and quarrying industry (crude oil, pelletized or sintered iron ore and natural gas), in the former; and mining and quarrying industry (crude oil and natural gas) and machinery and equipment (parts or accessories for drilling or boring machinery used in oil prospecting and e subsea (wet) Christmas trees for oil or gas wells – pipe-lines), in the latter.
Rio Grande do Sul (4.9%), Mato Grosso (2.9%), Minas Gerais (2.0%), Ceará (2.0%), and Pernambuco (1.5%) also recorded increases above the national average (0.4%), while Goiás (0.1%) completed the set of locations with positive rates in the monthly index for December 2025.
On the other hand, Pará (-12.7%), Bahia (-9.2%), and Rio Grande do Norte (-9.2%) recorded the sharpest declines this month, driven, to a great extent, by mining and quarrying industry (iron and manganese ores – both raw or processed), in the first location; of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel oil, automotive gasoline, aviation kerosene and fuel oils), chemical products (unsaturated propene, linear polyethylene, unsaturated ethylene and mixtures of alkylbenzenes or alkylnaphthalenes) and electrical machinery, apparatus and equipment (fans or circulators for domestic use and household appliances), in the second; and of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel oil), in the last one.
Amazonas (-6.5%), Northeast Region (-4.4%), Mato Grosso do Sul (-3.4%), São Paulo (-3.2%), Maranhão (-1.9%), Paraná (-1.2%) and Santa Catarina (-0.3%) recorded the other negative results in the monthly index for December 2025.
On a quarterly basis, the national industrial sector, recorded a 0.5% drop in October-December 2025 and interrupted the positive trend that began in the fourth quarter of 2023 (1.1%), all comparisons against the same period of the previous year. The movement of lower dynamism in the total national industry from the third (0.5%) to the fourth quarter of 2025 (-0.5%) was also observed in 10 of the 18 areas surveyed, with the biggest losses recorded by Pará (from 1.8% to -9.3%), Rio Grande do Norte (from -1.0% to -6.9%), Bahia (from 1.8% to -2.0%), São Paulo (from -1.1% to -4.2%), Northeast Region (from 1.6% to -0.6%) and Santa Catarina (from 2.4% to 0.2%). On the other hand, Mato Grosso (from -13.1% to -3.8%), Espírito Santo (from 16.1% to 24.4%), Minas Gerais (from -1.7% to 3.5%), Maranhão (from -6.3% to -2.3%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (from -16.3% to -13.2%) showed the main advances between the two periods.
As for figures cumulative in the year, the closing o year 2025 showed an expansion of 0.6%, with positive results in 10 of the 18 areas surveyed. Espírito Santo (11.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.1%) recorded the most significant advances for the twelve months of the year, driven mostly by mining and quarrying industry (crude oil, pelletized or sintered iron ores, and natural gas) in the former; and by mining and quarrying industry industries (crude oil and natural gas) in the latter.
Santa Catarina (3.2%), Goiás (2.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.4%), Minas Gerais (1.3%), and Pará (0.8%) also had higher positive rates than the national average (0.6%), while Paraná (0.3%), Bahia (0.3%), and Amazonas (0.1%) completed the set of locations with production growth at the end of the year. On the other hand, Mato Grosso do Sul (-12.9%) and Rio Grande do Norte (-11.6%) recorded double-digit decreases, the highest in the cumulative index for the period January-December 2025, mainly driven by the negative performance of coke, petroleum products, and biofuels (ethyl alcohol) in the former area; and coke, petroleum products, and biofuels (diesel oil and automotive gasoline) in the latter. Mato Grosso (-5.8%), Maranhão (-5.1%), Pernambuco (-3.8%), São Paulo (-2.2%), the Northeast Region (-0.8%) and Ceará (-0.6%) also showed negative results in the accumulated index for the twelve months of the year.
The annualized rate, a cumulative indicator over the last twelve months, grew by 0.6% in December 2025, remaining positive, but continued to show a loss of momentum from previous months. In regional terms, 10 of the 18 areas surveyed recorded positive rates in December 2025, but all 10 showed less dynamism compared to the figures from last November. Pará (from 2.3% to 0.8%), Amazonas (from 1.3% to 0.1%), Bahia (from 1.4% to 0.3%), the Northeast Region (from 0.0% to -0.8%), and Pernambuco (from -3.2% to -3.8%) recorded the most significant losses between November and December 2025, while Espírito Santo (from 9.0% to 11.6%), Rio de Janeiro (from 3.8% to 5.1%), Rio Grande do Norte (from -12.7% to -11.6%), Ceará (from -1.3% to -0.6%), and Maranhão (from -5.8% to -5.1%) showed the main gains between the two periods.
