Volume of services changes 0.3% in October

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of services changed 0.3% in October 2025 over the previous month. It was the ninth positive result in a row, a period in which it accumulated an increase of 3.7%. As a result, the sector was 20.1% above the pre-pandemic level (February 2020) and renewed, this month, the peak of its time series.

In the non-seasonally adjusted series, compared to October 2024, volume of services increased 2.2%, the 19th positive rate in a row. The cumulative result in the year was 2.8%. In 12 months, there was also an increase of 2.8%, reducing the pace of expansion compared to that accumulated until September (3.1%).
The 0.3% expansion in volume of services, from September to October 2025 (seasonally adjusted), was accompanied by all five activities, with emphasis on transportation (1.0%), which recorded the third positive result in a row, with a cumulative gain of 2.4%. The other advances came from information and communication (0.3%), which reduced the pace of expansion compared to September (1.2%); other services (0.5%), which showed the fourth consecutive increase, with a cumulative gain of 3.4%; professional and administrative services (0.1%) and services rendered to families (0.1%), both with slight increases after a decrease in the previous month.

The quarterly moving average was 0.4% in the quarter ended in October 2025, in the seasonally-adjusted series. Among the sectors, the positive behavior was followed by four out of five activities, with emphasis on other services (1.1%) and transportation (0.8%), followed by information and communication (0.3%) and services rendered to families (0.2%). Professional, administrative and complementary services (0.0%) remained stable.
In the comparison with October 2024, volume of services grew 2.2%, being the 19th positive result in a row. The advance was accompanied by four out of five activities and saw growth in 50.0% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the sectors, information and communication (5.7%) showed the main positive impact, driven mainly by the increase in revenue from portals, content providers and other information services on the internet; information technology consultancy; data processing, application service providers and internet hosting services; software development and licensing; development of custom computer programs; and open TV activities.
The other advances came from transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (1.3%); other services (4.0%); and services rendered to families (0.3%), explained, to a large extent, by the greater revenue coming from road cargo services; air passenger transportation; pipeline transportation; transportation logistics; and airport operation, in the first sector; insurance, supplementary pension and health insurance plans; securities brokerages, securities and commodities brokers; agricultural support activities; and collection of non-hazardous waste of domestic, urban or industrial origin, in the second; and hotels; catering services; and production and promotion of sporting events, in the last one.
On the other hand, professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.2%) exerted the only negative influence in the month, pressured, above all, by lower revenue from legal activities; rental of machinery and equipment; administrative and complementary services; and organization, promotion and management of fairs, congresses and conventions.
In the cumulative index from January to October 2025, the services sector expanded 2.8%, with positive results in four out of five activities and growth in 55.4% of the 166 types of services. Among the sectors, the most relevant positive contribution came from the information and communication sector (5.5%), largely driven by the increase in revenues of companies operating in the segments of portals, content providers and other information services on the Internet; software development and licensing; information technology consultancy; data processing, application service providers and Internet hosting services; development of custom computer programs; and technical support, maintenance and other information technology services.
The other advances came from transportation, support services for transportation and mailing (2.8%); professional, administrative and complementary services (2.2%); and services rendered to families (1.1%), mainly explained by the increase in revenue from companies operating in the air transportation of passengers; cargo logistics; road cargo transportation; airport operation; pipeline transportation; and inland cargo navigation, in the first sector; and from agencying of advertising spaces; business intermediation in general through applications or e-commerce platforms; business management consultancy; and cleaning activities, in the second one; and catering services; hotels; and restaurants, in the last one.
Conversely, other services (-1.1%) exerted the only negative influence, largely pressured by lower revenue from activities auxiliary financial services; credit card administration; maintenance and repair of motor vehicles; and maintenance and repair of computers and peripheral equipment.
Services grow in 15 out of 27 Federation Units
Most (15) of the 27 Federation Units saw growth in volume of services in October 2025, compared to September (seasonally adjusted). The most significant positive impacts came from Rio de Janeiro (2.0%) and Paraná (2.5%), followed by Espírito Santo (4.6%), Mato Grosso do Sul (6.3%) and Santa Catarina (1.1%). On the other hand, São Paulo (-0.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.9%) and the Federal District (-3.9%) exerted the main negative influences, followed by Mato Grosso (-3.3%) and Minas Gerais (-0.4%).
In the comparison with October 2024, the expansion in volume of services was followed by 17 out of 27 Federation Units. The most relevant positive contribution came from São Paulo (2.9%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (4.9%), Federal District (10.6%), Espírito Santo (5.9%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (8.4%). In the opposite direction, Rio Grande do Sul (-3.7%) led the month's losses, followed by Bahia (-2.8%), Amazonas (-5.2%), Minas Gerais (-0.7%) and Mato Grosso (-2.8%).
In the cumulative period from January to October 2025, compared to the same period of the previous year, the increase in volume of services occurred in a widespread manner, with 21 out of 27 Federation Units on the rise. São Paulo (4.4%) showed the main positive impact, followed by the Federal District (7.8%), Rio de Janeiro (1.4%), Santa Catarina (3.7%) and Paraná (2.4%). Rio Grande do Sul (-4.3%) registered the most intense negative influence.
Tourism activities increase 0.8%
The tourism activity index grew 0.8% in October, compared to the previous month (seasonally adjusted). This was the third positive result in a row, a period in which it accumulated a gain of 2.1%. As a result, the tourism segment was 12.7% above the level of February 2020 and 1.0% below the peak of its time series (December 2024).
Regionally, 13 out of 17 places followed the growth of national tourism activity (0.8%). The most relevant positive contribution came from Rio de Janeiro (3.1%), followed by Rio Grande do Sul (4.5%), Paraná (2.4%) and Santa Catarina (3.5%). In the opposite direction, São Paulo (-0.1%) led tourism losses this month, followed by Amazonas (-0.7%) and Goiás (-0.5%).
In the comparison with October 2024, the national tourism activity index expanded by 1.6%, the 17th positive result in a row, being driven mainly by the increase in revenue from companies operating in the sectors of air passenger transportation; hotels; and catering services.
In regional terms, 13 out of 17 Federation Units advanced, with a highlight to Rio de Janeiro (8.9%), followed by Rio Grande do Sul (17.1%), Federal District (7.4%), Paraná (4.4%) and Bahia (3.8%). On the other hand, São Paulo (-1.9%) showed the main negative impact of the month, followed by Minas Gerais (-5.6%), Goiás (-6.8%) and Santa Catarina (-2.8%).
In the cumulative period from January to October 2025, the special aggregate of tourism activities grew 5.3% compared to the same period last year, driven, above all, by the increases in revenue obtained by companies in the sector of passenger air transportation; catering services; reservation services relating to accommodation; hotels; and restaurants.
Regionally, 15 out of 17 places also recorded positive rates, with highlights being São Paulo (4.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (10.6%), followed by Rio Grande do Sul (12.7%), Bahia (7.4%) and Paraná (5.6%). Conversely, Minas Gerais (-3.9%) and Mato Grosso (-1.8%) recorded the only losses in the year.
Passenger transportation grows 2.3% and cargo transportation, 0.9%
The volume of passenger transportation registered a positive change of 2.3% between September and October (seasonally adjusted), the third positive result in a row, a period in which it accumulated 3.2%. Therefore, the segment was 13.1% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 13.0% below February 2014 (highest point in the time series).
In this same comparison, the volume of cargo transportation increased 0.9% in October 2025, the fifth positive result in a row, a period in which it accumulated gains of 3.7%. Therefore, the segment is 2.5% below the highest point in its time series (July 2023). In relation to the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation is 41.0% above February 2020.
Compared to October 2024, passenger transportation increased by 1.2%, the 14th positive result in a row. Cargo transportation increased 2.8%, in the same type of comparison, the sixth consecutive increase.
In the cumulative period from January to October 2025, passenger transportation expanded 6.8% compared to the same period in 2024, while cargo transportation increased 1.1% in the same period.
