Volume of sales of the retail trade changed -0.3% in September 2025 compared to August, after changing 0.1% in the previous month. The quarterly moving average remained stable (-0.1%). Compared to September 2024, volume of sales of retail grew 0.8%, the sixth positive rate in a row. In the year, retail sales accumulated a growth of 1.5%. The cumulative result in 12 months was 2.1%.

In extended retail trade, which includes Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, Construction material and Wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco, volume of sales changed 0.2% in September compared to August. The moving average showed growth of 1.0%. Compared to September 2024, there was growth of 1.1%. In the year, extended retail accumulated -0.3%. The accumulated result in 12 months was 0.7%.
In the seasonally-adjusted series, negative rates prevailed from August to September 2025 in the activities of retail trade. Negative rates were recorded in six out of eight sectors: Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-1.6%), Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (-1.2%), Fuels and lubricants (-0.9%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-0.9%), Furniture and household appliances (-0.5%) and Hyper, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.2%).
The positive rates were due to Other articles for personal and domestic use (0.5%) and Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic articles and toiletries (1.3%)
In extended retail trade, the two activities had results with different readings when comparing September with August: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces with a drop of 0.8% and Construction material with a change of -0.1%.

Four out of eight activities had positive results compared to September 2024
In comparison with the same month of the previous year, the 0.8% growth in retail was followed by four out of eight activities: Furniture and household appliances (7.5%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material (5.8%), Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (5.0%) and Other articles for personal and domestic use (2.8%). On the other hand, four was also the number of activities that recorded a drop in the inter-annual indicator: Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-2.1%), Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (-1.6%), Fuel and lubricants (-0.8%) and Hyper, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.6%).
In extended retail, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces dropped 1.6%, Construction material had a change of -0.3% and Wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco grew 7.7%.

The sector of Office, computer and communication equipment and material recorded, in September, an increase of 5.8% compared to the same month of the previous year, the first month of growth after two months of decline: -4.7% in July and -0.7% in August. The cumulative indicator in the year added up to -0.5% until September, recovering in relation to August (-1.3%). In the last 12 months, the result was the same: -1.3% until August and -0.5% until September.
The activity of Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries registered growth (5.0%) for the thirty-first consecutive month, in the comparison month against the same month of the previous year (the last month to show a change in the negative field was February 2024: -0.5%). The sector also recorded the biggest contribution to the formation of the retail rate, together with Furniture and household appliances, adding up to 0.5 p.p. to a total of 0.8% of the inter-annual indicator. For the cumulative indicator in the year, the result in September 2025 was 3.6%, maintaining a similar level since April (3.7%). In the last 12 months, the result until September 2025 was 4.0%, decelerating since October 2024 (7.8%).
On the other hand, Other articles for personal and domestic use recorded, in September 2025, its sixth consecutive month of rise, in the inter-annual comparison: 2.8%. In the comparison between Septembers, the activity exerted the third biggest contribution to the composition of the retail trade rate, with 0.2 p.p. out of a total of 0.8% for retail. The trajectory was also of growth both for the cumulative index in the year (2.1%) and for the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months (3.5%). These results highlight the recovery that the sector has been experiencing, in 2024 and 2025, after a period of negative performance in 2023, with the closure of physical stores, which occurred due to the accounting crisis of large companies in the sector.
The activity of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery showed, in September 2025 compared to the same month in 2024, a drop of 2.1%, the first negative rate after two months of increase. Despite the downward trend in the sector's volume of sales over the last months, the sector accumulated gains in the third quarter of 2025 (0.9%) in relation to the same period in 2024, which has not happened since the first quarter of 2023 (3.3%). In the year, until September, the sector accumulated losses of 1.7%. In the last 12 months, losses were 3.2% until September, less intense than until August (-3.8%).
In the case of Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear, the inter-annual rate for the month of September 2025 was -1.6%, after growth of 0.6% in August 2025. Still comparing month against the same month in the previous year, throughout 2025, only two months recorded negative rates (-1.4% in July, -1.6% in September), with all others indicating positive changes in volume of sales. In the year, the sector accumulated gains of 3.3% until September and, in the last 12 months, the result was also positive: 4.1%, but losing intensity since June (5.5%).
The group of Fuels and lubricants, in the inter-annual comparison, had, in September 2025, a result 0.8% lower than in September 2024, reversing two consecutive positive results (3.1% in July and 0.3% in August). As a result, the third quarter of 2025, in relation to the same period in 2024, for the sector was growth: 0.9%. In the year, the accumulation was positive, reaching 0.5% until September. A similar scenario occurs in the last 12 months: 0.6% until September.
The activity of Hyper, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco fell 0.6% in the comparison of September 2025 with the same month of the previous year, the same rate presented in August in this comparison. Additionally, in the last ten months, the sector recorded a drop in six: December 2024 (-0.8%), February 2025 (-0.3%), March (-1.4%), June (-0.3%) and August (-0.6%), in addition to September. In the year up to September, the accumulation was positive at 0.8%, below the previous result (1.0% up to August). In the last 12 months, the result was also decreasing gains: 3.5% until April against 1.4% until September.
In the extended retail, in comparison with 2024, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces closed September 2025 with a drop of 1.6% compared to September 2024. In the time series, this was the fourth consecutive month showing a decline (the last increase was in May 2025: 1.5%). The September result led the sector to record the biggest contribution, in the negative field, to the formation of the extended global rate, adding up to -0.3 p.p. out of a total of 1.1%. In terms of the cumulative index in the year, the result was -2.8% until September, a level similar to the previous month (-2.9%). In the last 12 months, the accumulation was positive: 0.3% until September, the lowest result since the beginning of the current sequence of 28 consecutive positive results (the last drop was in May 2023: -1.4%).
Construction material changed -0.3% in September 2025 in relation to September 2024, the fourth consecutive month recording negative results (-3.8% in June, -2.7% in July and -6.1% in August). As a result, the sector's third quarter recorded a 3.1% drop compared to the third quarter of 2024. The cumulative result for the year closed at 0.6% and has been in the positive field since April 2024, with the rate recorded in September being the lowest one in this sequence. In the last twelve months, the result was also gains: 2.0%, the eighteenth positive result in a row.
Wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco registered an increase of 7.7% compared to September 2024, breaking a series of 13 consecutive months of decline in the inter-annual indicator. The September result placed the sector as the main one in terms of contribution in the positive field, in the volume indicator, representing 1.0 p.p. out of 1.1% of the extended retail. In the year, the scenario was losses: -4.5% until September. In the cumulative index over the last 12 months, the result was negative 5.5% until September 2025, compared to the same period of the previous year.
Retail trade has positive rates in 15 out of 27 Federation Units
From August to September 2025, in the seasonally-adjusted series, the retail had negative results in 15 out of 27 Federation Units, with emphasis on Maranhão (-2.2%), Roraima (-2.0%) and the Federal District (-1.7%). On the positive side, there were 11 out of 27 Federation Units, with emphasis on Tocantins (3.2%), Amapá (2.9%) and Bahia (2.4%). Rio Grande do Norte remained stable (0.0%) from August to September.
In the extended retail trade, the change between August and September 2025 had positive results in 14 out of 27 Federation Units, with emphasis on: Tocantins (11.4%), Minas Gerais (3.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (2.7%). On the negative side, there were 12 out of 27 Federation Units, with highlights being Paraná (-1.8%), São Paulo (-1.6%) and Roraima (-1.5%). Maranhão, in this comparison, registered stability (0.0%).
Compared to September 2024, the retail trade showed positive results in 20 out of 27 Federation Units, with emphasis on: Amapá (10.0%), Rio Grande do Norte (7.9%) and Bahia (5.9%). On the negative side there were seven rates, with emphasis on Piauí (-5.4%), Roraima (-5.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.6%).
In the extended retail, the change in volume of sales was 1.1%, with positive results in 22 out of 27 Federation Units, with emphasis on: Tocantins (20.7%), Amapá (10.8%) and Mato Grosso (8.5%). On the negative side, there were 5 regional results, with highlights for São Paulo (-3.6%), Piauí (-2.7%) and Pernambuco (-2.3%).
