The IBGE was honored for its 90th anniversary, celebrated this month, in a solemn session at the Legislative Assembly of Paraná, this Tuesday (27). The tribute highlighted the institution's trajectory in the production and dissemination of statistical and geoscientific information that supports public and private planning in Brazil.

The tribute, proposed by representatives Alexandre Curi (Republicanos), Luiz Claudio Romanelli (PSD) and Arilson Chiorato (PT), aimed to recognize the relevance of the information produced by the IBGE for the formulation, monitoring and evaluation of public policies, as well as for monitoring social, economic and territorial transformations in Brazil.

Founded in 1936, the IBGE has established itself as the main Brazilian institution in the production of statistical, geographic, cartographic, geodetic and environmental information, fundamental for understanding the national reality and planning public policies.

The President of the IBGE, Marcou Pochmann, celebrated the tribute from the legislative house: “The Special Session of the Legislative Assembly of Paraná reaffirmed that, at the age of 90 years, the IBGE continues to be one of the most strategic institutions of national sovereignty: where there is public science, quality statistics and commitment to the real Brazil.”

The President of the Legislative Assembly, representative Alexandre Curi (Republicanos), recalled that, by monitoring social, economic and territorial transformations in Brazil, the IBGE produces data relevant to public policies.

“It is 90 years of a beautiful story. The IBGE is responsible for providing a path for those who prioritize public policies, an investment with government planning and a technical basis for making fundamental decisions for our country,” told Curi.

Representative Luiz Claudio Romanelli (PSD) commented on the support that the institute gives to the state of Paraná. “The IBGE has a fundamental role for the Brazilian and Paraná economy, because it is the one that measures economic activity and the performance of society. It is based on this information that Paraná, through Ipardes and the Secretariat of Planning, builds its multi-annual plan and defines strategic actions for the development of the State,” stated him.

For representative Arilson Chiorato (PT), who was also the author of the proposal, the IBGE is strategic for the efficiency of public management in Brazil and for the solidity of Brazilian democracy. “Science is not a luxury; it is a requirement for development. Celebrating the IBGE’s 90th anniversary today is celebrating the intelligence of the Brazilian people,” declared him.

During the ceremony, the IBGE´s historical contribution to national development was emphasized, through the carrying out of population, economic and agricultural censuses, in addition to continuous surveys that monitor themes such as prices, labor market, economic activity and Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Superintendent of the IBGE in Paraná, Tobias Faria, highlighted that, over nine decades, the institution has consolidated a broad collection of information about the Brazilian reality, covering different dimensions of society. “We have a repertoire of information built over 90 years and which will continue to be delivered to society in the coming decades. Both in the State and in the municipalities, the Legislative is a fundamental partner for the IBGE. We need this dialogue to move forward with our projects, especially the Population Census scheduled for 2030,” commented him.

The IBGE´s Director of Technology and Information, Marcos Mazoni, who has a professional background in Paraná, highlighted that the IBGE anniversary comes at a time of technological revolution, with Artificial Intelligence incorporated into all routines, which is a challenge, but, at the same time, a strength of a pioneering institute like the IBGE.

“The IBGE is an institution extremely respected throughout the world, by all NSOs (National Statistical Offices). We were the first to have technological development for the Population Census. In 2027, we will carry out the Census of Agriculture, incorporating new technologies and then another major operation, the Census of Population Experiencing Homelessness, in which we will also use all this infrastructure,” declared him.

Representatives of public institutions also highlighted the use of the IBGE data in preparing regional indicators, monitoring economic activity and planning state policies. The President of the Paraná Institute for Economic and Social Development (Ipardes), Jorge Calado, highlighted the historical and strategic relationship between Ipardes and the IBGE.

“The IBGE and Ipardes are sister institutes. This year, the IBGE celebrates 90 years and Ipardes, 53. Most of the indicators we use to monitor the reality of Paraná are based on the IBGE data, including essential information for calculating the state GDP, quarterly GDP and economic activity indices,” stated him.

The session was attended by authorities from the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary branches, as well as representatives of public institutions and civil society entities in Paraná. The event also featured a performance by the Paraná Military Fire Brigade Music Band.

Tributes in other states

In addition to Paraná, the IBGE has already been honored in the Legislative Assemblies of Pará and Sergipe. The celebrations are part of the national calendar of events commemorating the Institution's 90th anniversary.

The session is part of a series of commemorative events across Brazil, which will take place over the coming months. The complete program for the IBGE's 90th anniversary can be seen on the commemorative portal: IBGE 90 years
