It is false that IBGE has released survey on cities with the largest homeless population

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reports that a message is circulating on social media stating that the municipality of Torres (RS) appears as the 7th municipality in Brazil with the largest homeless population, based on a supposed IBGE survey. The information is false.

The IBGE informs that it does not carry out regular surveys or produce municipal rankings on the homeless population. Therefore, any content that attributes this type of classification or position between cities to the IBGE does not correspond to reality.

Although the topic of the homeless population is relevant and demands attention from public authorities and society, data on this group is usually obtained from other sources, such as administrative records, CadÚnico or specific studies carried out by survey institutions and local administrations — and not through official IBGE rankings.

The dissemination of incorrect information can generate misinformation and harm qualified public debate. To monitor reliable data, it is recommended to always consult the official channels of the IBGE and public offices responsible for the social area.

It is true: the IBGE announced the carrying out of the 1st National Census of Population Experiencing Homelessness, scheduled to take place between July 3 and 7, 2028, with the first results being released in December 2028. The unprecedented initiative will map, in a standardized way across the country, the demographic and socioeconomic profile of this population, providing official data to support more effective public policies.
