IBGE celebrates its 90th anniversary with an event at Itamaraty Palace and launch of publications.
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) kickstarts the celebration of its 90 anniversary with a special event that will gather mre than 20 diplomatic representations and international bodies, public and private managers on May 04, 2026, in Brasília. The ceremony, which will be held at Itamaraty Palace with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will have as participants authorities, experts and other guests, will mark the launch of two publications "Brazil in Figures – 2025” and “IBGE around the World.”
The opening panel session will have as main guest Mauro Vieira, minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil; Bruno Moretti, minister of Planning and Budget; Marcio Pochmann, president of the IBGE; Maria Luisa Ribeiro Lopes, deputy director of the Brazilian Agency for Cooperation; and Claudio Providas, resident representative of the United Nations Development Program (PNUD) in Brazil.
The iniative opens the actions to celebrate the Institute's nine decades of history, with the release of the first special works focused on the IBGE's statistical production and international activity.
The publication “IBGE around the World”, available in Portuguese, Spanish and English, ´resents an overview of the main international actions promoted by the institute in 2025, thus expanding access to information and strengthening cooperation ith foreign partners.
“Brazil in Figures – 2025”, in its 33rd edition, provides a comprehensive portrait of social, demographic and economic data in Brazil. For the first time, the articles were written by IBGE officials and the illustrations taken for the Institute's archives.
The president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, highlighted the decentralized and strategic nature of the institution: “The IBGE is a national institution, present in more than 560 branches distributed across 27 state superintendencies. The 90th anniversary celebration should take place in all locations where the IBGE is located. This event, held in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reinforces a fundamental aspect of our work: beyond national activities, IBGE also projects itself internationally through cooperation and technical exchange. At this moment, we seek to demonstrate to Brazilian society the breadth of this role.”
The event will take place at Itamaraty Palace and on-site participation requires registration on the IBGE Online Shop until April 30, 2026.
