April's inflation preview was 0.89%, 0.45 percentage points (pp) above the rate recorded in March (0.44%). The Extented National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15), released today (28) by IBGE, indicates that the largest change and the greatest positive impact came from the Food and Beverages group (1.46% and 0.31 pp). In the year, the IPCA-15 accumulates an increase of 2.39% and, in the last 12 months, of 4.37%, above the 3.90% observed in the preceding 12 months. In April 2025, the rate had been 0.43%.

In the Food and Beverages group (1.46%), the result was mainly influenced by the increase in food consumed at home, which accelerated from 1.10% in March to 1.77% in April. The prices of the following products contributed to the result: carrots (25.43%), onions (16.54%), long-life milk (16.33%), tomatoes (13.76%), and meat (1.14%).

Food consumed away from home (0.70%) accelerated compared to March (0.35%), due to the increase in snacks (0.87%) and meals (0.65%), which registered increases of 0.50% and 0.31%, respectively, in March.

The Transportation group (1.34%) had the second largest impact on the overall index (0.27 pp), driven by the increase in fuel prices, which went from -0.03% in March to 6.06% in April. Gasoline (6.23%) was the main individual impact on the month's index (0.32 pp), after having decreased by 0.08% in March.

Health and personal care (0.93% and 0.13 pp) had the third largest influence on the overall result, due to increases in personal hygiene items (1.32%), in pharmaceutical products (1.16%), after the authorization of a rise of up to 3.81% in drug prices, starting April 1st, and in health insurance plans (0.49%).

The Housing group accelerated from 0.24% in March to 0.42% in April. Residential electricity was 0.68% (0.29% in March), including the rises of 6.92% and 14.66% in the tariffs of the concessionaires in Rio de Janeiro (6.50%), starting March 15th.

Belém registers increases of 12.79% in açaí and 9.33% in gasoline in April

Regarding regional indices, the largest change was registered in Belém (1.46%), due to increases in açaí (12.79%) and gasoline (9.33%). The smallest result occurred in Brasília (0.41%), which showed a decrease in airfare prices (-10.88%) and pharmaceutical products (-0.61%).

More about the survey

For the calculation of the IPCA-15, prices were collected in the period from March 18 to April 15, 2026 (reference) and compared with those in effect from February 13 to March 17, 2026 (base). The indicator refers to families with incomes ranging from 1 to 40 minimum wages and covers the Metropolitan Areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador, and Curitiba, as well as Brasília and the municipality of Goiânia. The methodology used is the same as the IPCA (Extended National Consumer Price Index), the difference being in the period of price collection and in the geographical scope. See the complete results on Sidra. The next IPCA-15 release will be on May 27, 2026.
