State Thematic Seminars will be held as part of the celebrations for the 90th anniversary of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The initiative reinforces the concept that marks 90 years: “My State / My Brazil / Our IBGE,” highlighting the trajectory and contributions of the IBGE in each Brazilian state.

Each Federation Unit will host a seminar, with an approach that values local experiences, the work of officials and partnerships with regional institutions, highlighting how the IBGE is built nationally based on state singularities. The detailed agenda of events will be released soon.

The State Thematic Seminars will cover nine thematic areas, which reflect the diversity and complexity of the activities carried out by the IBGE throughout its history: Administrative; Data Collection; Dissemination; Geosciences; Partnerships; Surveys; State Superintendencies and Branches; Technology; and Training and Qualification.

For the State Superintendent of the IBGE in Rio Grande do Norte, Fabiana Fábrega de Oliveira, the seminars represent a strategic moment of valuing the history and people who build IBGE on a daily basis: “Holding the Thematic Seminars in the states, including RN, will be an excellent opportunity to rescue our history and record the memory built in each territory over these 90 years of the IBGE. We are excited because we understand that bringing together local officials and partners and valuing the experiences lived in the Federation Units contributes greatly to strengthening ties, expanding cooperation and reaffirming the importance of an Institute that becomes truly national by integrating the singularities of each state.”

The meetings will begin in May and may last for up to a year, resulting in the production of a commemorative book, in addition to historical documents and dissemination materials. This set of products will consolidate the institutional and state memory of the IBGE, preserving fundamental records of the IBGE's activities throughout its 90 years.

According to the State Superintendent of the IBGE in Pará, Rony Helder Cordeiro, “it is important for the IBGE to rescue this history in the Superintendencies, in the states, because it is very rich. In the state of Pará, for example, the history of the IBGE is intertwined with the history of the state. In Belém, the IBGE headquarters building was the residence of the city's former intendant at the beginning of the 20th century, Antônio Lemos, an icon for the city. IBGE acquired this building in the 1960s. In addition to the historical issue, it is important to preserve the memory of the officials who worked at the IBGE, who left their mark. I understand that the seminar will bring this opportunity to recover the living memory of the active and retired officials who contributed to having the Institute that we have today. And also rescue the history that is intertwined with the history of Belém and the state of Pará. Two very important aspects that will contribute to further valuing our IBGE.”

More than spaces for reflection and exchange of experiences, the State Thematic Seminars play a central role in the construction and preservation of the institutional memory of the IBGE in the states. The proposal is to record trajectories, practices and experiences developed in the Federation Units throughout the IBGE´s 90 years, recognizing the role of officials and the importance of local realities in the formation of a truly national IBGE.
