On May 4, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics - IBGE will initiate the commemorative actions for its 90th anniversary with a special event at the Itamaraty Palace, in Brasília (DF). Two publications will be launched during the event: Brazil in Figures and IBGE around the World.
"IBGE around the World", available in three different languages – Portuguese, Spanish and English –, presents a record of the Institute's main international activities in 2025. The publication aims at expanding access to content and strengthen cooperation with partner countries, and focuses on the position of Brazil as a protagonist in strategic forums of statistics and geosciences.
The traditional “Brazil in Figures,” a bilingual publication – in Portuguese and English – in its 33rd edition, provides a comprehensive view of social, demographic and economic data in Brazil. For the first time, the articles were written by experts selected among IBGE officials and the illustrations in the book were obtained from the Institute's archive , thus reinforcing the identity and credibility of the publication.
The president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, emphasized the symbolic nature of the ceremony: “These two publications – Brazil in Figures 2025 and IBGE around World – which will be launched at the iconic Itamaraty Palace are part of the ongoing process for democratization of Brazilian statistical information amid the diplomacy, a confirmation of their strategic role in the construction of sovereignty, transparency and of the distinguished presence of Brazil in the international scenario.”
The IBGE Manager of International Relations, Andrea Diniz, addressed the relevance of both launches: “The IBGE will begin celebrations of its 90th anniversary by presenting society and the international statistical community with two special gifts: Brazil in Figures and IBGE around the World, one bilingual publication in Portuguese and English and a trilingual one, in Portuguese, Spanish and English. In a globalized world it is important to provide information about the Brazilian reality in other languages, in order to increase knowledge about Brazil in its territorial, demographic, social, economic and political dimensions. It is also important to make known Brazil's prominent position in strategic forums of statistics and geosciences; therefore, we revisit the activities conducted in 2025, the year in which Brazil held the presidency of BRICS and MERCOSUR.”
With this event, the IBGE officially begins celebrations of its 90th anniversary and reaffirms its mission of producing and disseminating reliable information of public interest, which are essential for the development of the country and the strengthening of international cooperation.
