The second edition of the Federative Caravan held in Maranhão gathered, on September 11 and 12, at Multicenter Sebrae, in the capital São Luís, several federal bodies and institutions. The IBGE stand was visited by state secretaries, mayors, teachers, students, representatives of social movements and general population, totaling more than 300 assistances. My IBGE and Overview of the Municipalities were the most looked for products. The objective of the Caravan was to bring public power closer to society, by clearing doubts or providing services. José Daniel Castro, General Coordinator of the Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination, and João Ricardo Costa Silva, analyst of the Information Dissemination Section together with the Superintendency team represented the IBGE in the Caravan.

João Ricardo classified as crucial the participation of the Institute in this project. “IBGE’s participation is fundamental, as it is a great provider of statistical and geoscientific data and information that underpins decision-making, as well as the design and monitoring of several public policies,” he highlights. He also stresses that the “IBGE makes itself available to train municipal and state managers in the use of the Institute’s digital tools and database”, he concludes.

Throughout the two days of activities, municipal authorities, as the mayor of Loreto, Germano Coelho, passed by the IBGE stand. He highlighted the importance of the IBGE data to public management: “It is a rich database, able to help any manager. So, we are thankful for the assistance so that we can keep exchanging information and improving to see the indices in which we can do better. Being aware of the IBGE data guides us as managers”, he says.

Representing the Ministry of Agrarian and Family Farming Development, João Carlos was present at the IBGE stand, since, according to him, “the IBGE is a very important body for public policy design, and for accessing data for an accurate diagnosis. For that reason, I see the IBGE as an intelligence agency in Brazil, for one cannot think of public policies without a real portrait of what Brazil is”, he analyses.

The IBGE stand also received the visit of the Ministry of Agriculture, represented by servant Katia Nicolau, which highlighted the partnership between the Institute and her Ministry, for instance, in the surveys carried out in the sectors of Agriculture and Livestock.

Municipal secretaries, as the Secretary of the Environment of the city of Matinha, Jorge Luís, were also present at the event. He asked for data about his municipality: “I got some brochures on my city ranking in education, health, environment, tourism. That gives clarity to managers like me to choose a path that can favor our municipality,” he concluded.

Representatives of state bodies also visited the IBGE stand, as the manager of the house of culture, linked to the Secretariate of Culture of the State of Maranhão, Ana Cláudia Damascena. She reinforced the importance of the Caravan: “This event is of a crucial importance, since here we can learn many things, add value, meet new people, be closer to the Ministries and to the services provided”, she claims.
