This Thursday (September 4) and Friday (September 5), in the Convention Center in Natal, the IBGE participated in the first edition of the Federative Caravan in Rio Grande do Norte (RN) with three workshops on statistical and geographical data use for public managers, teachers and students. More than 200 consultation services and support material were delivered at the IBGE's stand.

The Minister of Institutional Relations, Gleise Hoffmann, visited the IBGE's stand, together with the RN governor, Fátima Bezerra, the General Coordinator of Information Documentation and Dissemination, José Daniel Castro, the state superintendent of the IBGE/RN, Fabiana Fábrega and team.

The event's first morning started with the workshops on the "IBGE System of Automatic Retrieval - SIDRA" and on the "@Cities Channel", taught by Fábio Lima and Eryka Silva. Next, the workshop on "PGI Specialized Census Information: Access to statistical information on territory" was delivered by Natália Barreira and Francivânio Santana.

The morning ended with an unprecedented workshop in the Caravan, with the IBGE manager of Educational Affairs, Marcos Baster, talking about the IBGEeduca project, which aims at presenting the information produced by the IBGE so as to promote learning and help teachers plan activities combining statistics, geography and Brazilian reality for primary and secondary students.

According to Marcos Balster, the objective of the initiative was to reach audiences that might not know the Institute's activities that can complement school teachings. "Here we had the chance to introduce ourselves for new audiences, of teachers and educators, that will help us take the project to their schools and education secretariats and, this way, complete our task", explained Mr. Balster.

Both in the workshop and at the stand of the Institute, IBGEeduca printed and digital material were presented to participants at the event, many of whom were from local school communities, as students and principals of the state's educational units. "Our job is not accomplished only by offering information on our website; information must reach schools and students," says Mr. Balster.

The public was addressed by four other servants of the IBGE State Superintendency in RN (SES/RN), who volunteered to conduct the activities on the stand offered by the event's organization. There was distribution of printed material, including School Atlases, IBGEeduca Mountable World Maps, volumes of Brazil and Figures and leaflets. In addition, a digital totem was made available to offer guided tours through IBGE’s systems.

Edson Silva, Secretary of Agriculture and Water Resources of Extremoz, a municipality in the Natal Metropolitan Area, congratulated the IBGE for its service. "I was immediately attended and very well received. My municipality's request was to identify and quantify the number of rural producers in Extremoz. The service was excellent, and I was directed to go straight to IBGE headquarters here in Natal to collect the data and information necessary for the municipality's multi-year planning."

Resumption of Federative Caravan includes social leaders and movements

The state superintendent in RN, Fabiana Fábrega, highlighted the connection made possible by the event, not only with public managers, but also with other society actors.

"The IBGE is inserted in the Federative Caravan with the purpose of adding up its services to all the others offered by the Federal Government bodies to the municipalities. The Caravans are recognized for welcoming mayors, secretaries and other interlocutors, but, at this moment of resumption, representatives of social movements and leaderships were included as well. In this edition, both municipalities and specific populations were able to recognize themselves by means of IBGE data", claimed Ms. Fábrega.
