“Similarly to the new data economy, the IBGE moves forward in an important process of modernization, mainly due to digital transformation. In this 32nd edition of Brazil in Figures, collective work is expressed as an important summary of data on Brazilian reality,” stated the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann.

The launch is a partnership with the Superintendence for the Development of Brazilian Northeast (Sudene), Banco  do Nordeste do Brasil (Bank of the Northeast of Brazil) and the State Government of Pernambuco. The publication aims at providing evidence to support public policies, as highlighted by the governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra, in the launch ceremony. She added that "Brazil in Figures evidences the historical commitment of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) to this mission. The work of the Institute is a parameter to reduce the gap between public policies and the problems faced by people in their everyday lives.”

"The publication Brazil in figures, edited by the IBGE, is an essential piece to explain our country. The publication not only gathers data, but shows a precise overview of the multiple dimensions forming geography, economy, the environment and social aspects of Brazil,” remarked the superintendent of Sudene, Danilo Cabral, in the foreword to the book.

The president of BNB, Paulo Câmara, highlighted in his introduction that the publication “presents an updated overview of the country and highlights its accomplishments, challenges and prospects for the future. With a careful look, the publication also deals with regional inequalities and local specificities, thus reinforcing the importance of public policies that are supported by data and evidence.”

This edition of the book is illustrated with works from Ricardo Brennand Institute. Opened in 2002, in Recife, the Institute is an architectural complex formed by a museum, an art gallery and an auditorium for events, all of which represent an important vector of tourism and culture in the state of Pernambuco, with elements of the history of Brazil since the colonial period. besides temporary exhibits and visits, the Institute offers educational visits and art history courses.

Brazil in Figures has been published every year since 1992. In addition to information produced by the IBGE, the authors use data from institutions such as the Central Bank, regulatory agencies, Federal Ministries and other public bodies. A traditional publication issued by the IBGE, the 2023 version was produced in partnership with the Museum of Nature, located in Serra da Capivara (a mountain range), in the state of Piauí, which granted the IBGE permission to use the images that open each chapter.
