The National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE/IBGE) will start, on December 23, pre-registration for the course Preservation of Privacy in Data Science, class of 2025. The purpose of this free course is to present and discuss privacy of personal data nd the potential of available data.

More information can be found at https://ence.ibge.gov.br/index.php/trilhas/cdbdia, which presents more information about the course. The link for pre-registration will be available from December 23, at 9 am to December 30, at  9 am.

A total of 60 vacancies will be offered by Major Region, sex and among IBGE civil servants and the general public. The order of registration is one of the criteria for participation. Applicants must have a higher education degree and course activities include reading of scientific articles and of support material in English.

With a 45-hour program, the course will start on January 21 and last for nine weeks, up to March 20, including a recess at Carnival time. The course encompasses remote synchronous activities (classes, seminars and debates) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 8 am to 10 am, and asynchronous activities (reading and research).

With the greater volume and complexity of data collected and processed to feed machine and artificial intelligence learning models, there has been increasing concern about privacy of personal data. In this respect, understanding Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs), is vital so that professionals be able to develop and implement solutions that optimize the potential of available data.

Augusto Fadel (IBGE) is the instructor in charge of this course where participants will discuss the main challenges in this field and learn techniques and approaches to mitigate them. The main topics are:

  • Introduction to data privacy and motivations for the use of PETs.
  • Risk evaluation.
  • Traditional methods for statistical confidentiality control: anonymization, pseudo anonymization and complementary techniques.
  • Advantages and challenges of the main PETs.
  • Ethical considerations.
  • Case studies and practical examples of PET application in data science and artificial intelligence programs.

Learning paths

The course Preservation of Privacy in Data Science is part of the learning path Data Science, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (CDBDIA), an ENCE/IBGE project that offers courses within this topic. Three courses were given in 2024: Introduction to Data Science (from May to July), Artificial Intelligence in Public Policies (in August and September) e Big Data and Official Statistics (from October to December). Other courses and paths are being planned and will be launched soon.
